HOW are a famous French composer and his lover linked with 鶹?
Claude Debussy, the influential composer born in 1862, found solace in the Island along with Emma Bardac in 1903.
He used his time here, away from the hustle and bustle of Paris, including scandal around the breakdown of his marriage, to work on pieces such as La Mer, L’isle Joyeuse and Masques.
In fact, he loved 鶹 so much that he claimed he was “ready” to take on the position of St Helier Constable.
Debussy had a love of the ocean which is depicted in a new series of stamps released by 鶹 Post.
The collection – “Debussy in 鶹” – has been designed by local artist Will Bertram.
Seaside vistas feature in the collection, among a backdrop of Debussy’s famous musical scores.
Portelet Bay, Corbière, St Brelade’s Bay, Havre des Pas and the Grand Hotel are also depicted.
The stamps are available from 鶹 Post’s offices in Broad Street and at Rue des Prés and can be ordered at: jerseystamps.com. Islanders can also call the 鶹 Philatelic Bureau on 616717.
